DAY SEVEN: Wednesday, Feb. 17.

Was supposed to return to work today but called in sick.

It’s getting worse. I spent the last three hours on the bathroom floor, kneeling against the bowl and crying weakly for help.

I called the hospital over three hours ago. Why haven’t they come?

Never mind. I know why they haven’t come. Reese must have given them my name. Yes. That’s it. Part of his mad scheme: Ignore any emergency calls from a Jonathan Gaines. He’s under my care.

I can just picture his evil little smile.

Oh, I didn’t tell you. I tried calling his office two days ago. Wait...

Sorry—sick again. Just heaving this time. Haven’t been able to keep anything down. Oh, right. Called Reese. Wasn’t in. Old nurse said he went to Chicago for the week. Some convention. Screamed at her that it was fucking urgent, and that I was going to sue that quack—if I didn’t kill him first. She hung up on me.

After the fourth try, I called the emergency ward. Or, at least I believe I did. I’m not thinking too straight right now. Memory failing. Yes. Yes, I did. I called them; I think.... But...there was no answer.

—Tried again. It’s all clear now. The phone’s dead. Reese must have cut the wires. I’m just a rat in his maze. The perfect experiment. There probably aren’t any other subjects. Just me.

He’s got cameras set up in here, doesn’t he? Recorders in the vents, bugs in the walls.

Oh, yes... I hear them now. I’ll find them. First, got to get the ax... Wait. A hit of rum before I start.

There! In the corner. Something long and dark with a silvery tail skittered under the bed. I went to look but there was nothing there.

Oh, Doc. I hope you’re getting all this on film. I must look like one crazed fool. But after I take apart this room with my ax and find your hidden monitors, I’m going to have evidence. And then... Wait, I’m dizzy. And the whispering’s begun again. Must fight it. Fight it long enough to finish this entry.

Where the fuck was I? Oh yeah—evidence.

What I really need is in your office. I’m going back there. To hell with your experiment. There may be others suffering as I am. I’ve got to get into your files, see what the real objective of this little game is.

You’re going to pay, Dr. Reese, and pay good.
